Why?
90% of all Belgians drink at least one cup of coffee a day.
Together we consume 67.000 tons of coffee, every year.
Only 20% of that coffee actually makes it to our daily cup.
That means 80% is treated as waste.
Currently there are options to recover energy from spent coffee grounds but this is suboptimal as it ignores the true value of the resource left behind.
So can we turn this story around?
Of course we can! Fact: spent coffee grounds are still packed with valuable ingredients like oil, dietary fiber, protein, antioxidants, and many other bioactive compounds.
And we would let these go to waste? 18 million tons worldwide, every single year?
That doesn’t sound right.
That’s where our story begins. We transform spent coffee grounds into new circular resources for personal care and cosmetic products, advanced materials, and much more.
