cold processed soap
Circulatte soap bars are made using the traditional “cold process” saponification method. This involves a simple chemical reaction between lye (sodium hydroxide) and fats, which creates soap. This soap then has to cure for 4-6 weeks. Compared to large-scale industrial production, cold process soap making offers several benefits:
- More environmentally friendly since the process doesn't require additional energy in the form of heat.
- Moisturizing & softening properties: In addition to the soap itself, the soap bars contain a small excess of oil called "superfat" (around 5%) and a large "non-saponified" part consisting mainly of natural glycerin. These ingredients provide moisturizing and softening properties to the soap.
- Preserving natural benefits: The slow process of cold process soap making better preserves the natural ingredients and their beneficial properties.
